Today we’ll start the day at 5:30 a.m. We’ll pick you up from your hotel and head to the village of Pacchanta (4300 m – 14,108 ft) in private transport. Along the way, we’ll stop at the Huacarpay Lagoon viewpoint so you can take incredible photos of this colorful landscape. We’ll continue our journey to Ocongate, where we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast while admiring the snow-capped peaks of the sacred Ausangate mountain in the distance.
Afterward, we’ll arrive at the community of Pacchanta and enjoy the Pacchanta hot springs. Afterward, we’ll begin our three-hour hike uphill to reach the first of the seven Ausangate lagoons, where we’ll have a delicious lunch.
After lunch, you’ll have the afternoon to enjoy the surroundings near our campsite, and in the evening, we’ll have dinner and rest up for the next day.
The day begins with a wake-up call in your tents with coca tea. After breakfast, we’ll start our approximately 3-hour uphill hike, exploring the seven lakes of Ausangate, and finally heading towards our lunch spot. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking glacial landscapes dotted with crystal-clear lagoons. One of the highlights is Comerccocha, known for its striking green waters.
Around noon, we’ll arrive at Pachaspata, a spectacular lunch spot surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks. Take a moment to feel the love and embrace of the mountains, opening your spirit to the energy of the Andes.
After recharging, we’ll continue deeper into the heart of the Andes. Open your mind to nature, stretch your arms to the sky, and release any burdens you may have carried.
Finally, we reach the Ccampa Pass (5,100m – 16,732ft), where we will perform a traditional Andean ritual ceremony with coca leaves in honor of these majestic sacred mountains. Our descent takes us to our campsite, located in the Qampa Camp mountain valley, where we will rest and prepare for the next stage of this unforgettable trek.
After enjoying a nutritious breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to the camp with a spectacular view of the valley, the river, and the waterfalls. You’ll also be able to feel the imposing presence of the mountains and observe small clusters of turquoise lakes, as well as local birds: geese, seagulls, and various types of ducks.
Today’s hike will be easier. We’ll begin the ascent, and after a few minutes, the path becomes easier, leading us to Killita where a delicious lunch awaits us, accompanied by Andean herbal tea to aid digestion.
Following lunch, we’ll hike the final stretch to Yanamayo Camp, always under the watchful gaze of the gigantic glaciers. After dinner, we’ll build a campfire to enjoy mulled wine and sangria while contemplating the vastness of the Andean night sky.
Prepare your body and spirit, because today we will reach the highest point of our trek. After breakfast, we will begin our hike at 7:30 a.m. with a gentle two-hour ascent. By then, llamas and alpacas will already be grazing. You can approach and touch them if you wish. We will continue our ascent for an hour over soft sand and snow. If you are lucky, some wild vicuñas will cross your path! Later, we will reach Condor Pass at 5400 m / 17,716 ft. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the incredible scenery of the surrounding mountains. It is a strategic spot to take the best photos and awaken your senses! Our team will offer you a hot coca leaf tea to help you cope with the extreme altitude.
Before continuing, we will give thanks to the mountains with a brief ritual. Some people leave coca leaves, flowers, or food to receive the mountains’ protection and enjoy excellent weather.
During this leg of the journey, we’ll also see herds of vicuñas, as well as llamas and alpacas. We’ll have lunch overlooking the beautiful Sibinacocha Lagoon. Here, we’ll have time for a short nap to recover from the day’s hike. We’ll continue for another two hours until we reach our campsite. Along the way, we’ll see traditional Andean houses and the charming chinchillas, Andean animals similar to squirrels.
We’ll wake you up with a delicious hot coca leaf tea to warm your body and start the day off right. Take advantage of the opportunity to contemplate the beautiful sunrise over the lake and glacier from your tent. After a tasty breakfast, we’ll begin our hike at 7:30 a.m. We’ll walk along the shores of Laguna Sibinacocha, the most famous and largest body of water in the area. We’ll make several stops to observe the birds you’ll find there. You’ll also have the opportunity to fish with permission from the locals.
We’ll arrive at a spot for lunch where, after satisfying your appetite, you can take a short break. We’ll continue with a gentle 2-hour ascent to Vicuña Mountain (5,150 m / 17,552 ft). From there, you can admire the abundant potato crops of the local farmers and curious rock formations. Enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling life in deep connection with nature!
We’ll arrive at our campsite near Ccasccara Lagoon (4,950m – 16,240ft). You can relax after five days of trekking! Some locals will approach our campsite and invite you to fish with them. Break down your mental barriers, make new friends, and enjoy fresh fish for dinner. This is the best campsite on the route, as you’ll sleep facing the lagoon and the glacier. Pure magic in the heart of the Andes!
Today we’ll wake up early for a scenic downhill hike. We’ll walk approximately 11 km through the heart of the Andes, surrounded by llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, on our way to the traditional village of Phinaya, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch.
After lunch, we’ll bid farewell to the majestic mountains we’ve crossed and to our trekking gear. Cusco is a very old city, therefore it has many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnb may be located on streets with no car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to carry luggage. We strongly recommend that you book an accommodation with good access.
Climate and conditions for the 6-day trek to Ausangate and Sibinacocha Lagoon. Daytime temperatures in the Ausangate and Sibinacocha region typically range from 10°C to 22°C, while nighttime temperatures drop to between 0°C and 8°C. Much of this trek takes place in the Andes, where the weather can change rapidly and nights can be very cold, especially in the campsites, with temperatures occasionally reaching -2°C.
During the dry season (May to September), the days are usually clear and sunny, although afternoon clouds may develop, bringing light rain. Morning temperatures in the campsites typically range from 2°C to 6°C, with possible frost on tents.
The trek includes plains and several mountain passes above 4,600 m (15,092 ft), reaching up to 5,400 m (17,717 ft) at the Condor Pass. It is essential to wear appropriate clothing and equipment for the cold, wind, and sudden changes in weather at high altitude.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also agree that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, everyone can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wants to modify the route; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications can be made.
It is very important to be well acclimatized to the altitude before exerting yourself on a hike. We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before the trek begins to help you acclimatize and avoid possible problems with altitude sickness during the trek.
Suppose you have already been to another area of Peru at a high altitude before arriving in Cusco. In that case, we still recommend that you have a full day in Cusco to rest, recover from your trip and fully enjoy your trek and have a unique experience.
Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored in our office (you can coordinate during the day of the briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both for free.
Any equipment you don’t need on the trek can be safely stored at your hotel. Almost all hotels will offer this service. Do not leave valuables with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and get an itemized receipt (in the unlikely event of theft, many insurance companies require you to have a copy of the receipt with all items). It’s best to put items like credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope for added peace of mind.
Strikes and demonstrations are often frequent in Peru, and this can interrupt some of our planned tours. They can block the roads and take control of the railroad tracks. However, we will try to keep your tour as planned, even if it means leaving the night before your scheduled date. In these circumstances, tours can also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our top priority and decisions will be made appropriately.
You are responsible for your personal belongings during the Ausangate & Sibinacocha Lagoon Trek 6 Days. Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to take everything once you leave your bus, tents, and restaurants.
