Frequent Questions

Here is a list of the frequently asked questions of our passengers

1Is the Salkantay Trekking difficult?

The Salkantay Trekking to Machu Picchu is a moderate to challenging trek. The most challenging part of the route is on day 2, when you climb the Salkantay Pass, reaching an altitude of 4,600 masl. It is a 3 hour stretch and is challenging due to the uphill climb and high altitude.

Day 1 is relatively challenging in the afternoon during the hike to Humantay Lake. Days 3 and 4 are much more manageable and are mostly downhill; however, it will cover more distance.
It is important to remember that most people would classify any hike in Cusco as relatively challenging due to the high altitude.

2Can I hike the Salkantay at any time?

The weather conditions during the rainy season make the Salkantay trek a risky decision. Therefore we cannot guarantee the availability of the Salkantay treks from mid-March to the end of February. If the weather is good, we will give the go-ahead to start a hike. If we believe that the safety of our porters and clients is threatened, we will cancel the trek.

3What should I do if I get altitude sickness?

If you get altitude sickness while on the trail, let your guide know immediately. They will help you. Recognize the symptoms of altitude sickness: a headache, nausea, extreme tiredness, dizziness, and a general malaise are all symptoms.

4Who will be leading the group?

We employ a number of qualified leaders. All of them speak English. They will also be a first aid qualified medical officer. They will ultimately be responsible for the running of the itinerary and the safety of your group. The itinerary is there as a guide and may change due to unusual weather patterns, the strength of the group and so on. We will do our very best to keep to the set itinerary. However we cannot be held responsible for any last minute changes that might occur. In all such circumstances, your challenge leader will have the final say.

5Is Water Included on the Trip?

Yes. You’ll need to make sure you take enough water for the first morning of your trek, but after this, we’ll provide you with boiled water to fill your bottle or pouch with at every meal and campsite. The water is clean and perfectly safe for you to drink, so you don’t need to worry in that respect.
Make sure you take a reusable bottle or Camelbak to use the entire trek. We prefer not to use plastic bottles to help protect the environment and the routes.

6Do I need to bring extra money for the trip?

Although everything is paid for in advance and included in the package, you definitely need to take some extra cash with you for the trek. Around 400 Peruvian soles are enough. Don’t take dollars, as these aren’t liable to tender in rural parts of the country.

You might not need to use any at all, but it’s always a good idea in case of emergencies or if you need to buy anything along the way. You might also find that you feel tired on a part of the route and would like to hire a horse for a small section.

7Can I Do the Trek With Kids?

Due to the somewhat challenging walk and weather conditions, we do not recommend traveling with small children. You will likely have to carry them most of the way, which will make it even more difficult for you.
We recommend that for this salkantay trekking route, the earliest age at which children join this trek is 12 years old. As long as your child is active and you walk a lot on the way home, you should be fine.

8Will I Have Wifi During the Trek?

If you’re hoping to get in contact with friends and family back home, you’ll find we have WiFi available on the second and third nights of the Salkantay Trekking. Please note that there’s an additional cost of 10 soles for the service.

The fourth night will be spent in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, where you’ll also have access to WiFi.

9Will I Have Access to Bathrooms Along the Trek?

Yes. There are bathrooms along the way. Peru Trek also takes chemical bathrooms for you to use along the way if needed.

10Should I Rent an Extra Horse on the Trek?

If you are concerned about the difficulty of the trek or the altitude that affects you, you have the option of renting an extra horse at a cost of $100 USD. However, it is important to note that you will only be able to ride the horse for the first two days as you climb. On the first day, you will also head a different route than the rest of the group if you opt for this.

During the other days, there will be certain times when you can decide to take a car or train instead of walking if you need to.
The additional horse does NOT need to be reserved in advance. You can decide right there on the first day if you want the horse to go uphill on the salkantay trekking route.

11Will I Be Able to Charge My Devices During the Trek?

Yes. At each of our campsites, you will have the opportunity to charge your devices. However, not everyone has the facility to leave your device charging overnight.

12What Is the Food Like on the Trek?

One of the aspects that probably surprises you the most is the food on the trek. Most guests mention how much they enjoyed the variety of dishes prepared by our professional chefs en route. You will be surprised by the food you eat in the middle of the mountains.

We know that nutrition on the routes is essential, since you need a lot of energy to get through each day. For this reason, we work long and hard, together with our chefs and the best nutritionists to put together the most complete menu possible for the salkantay trekking.

Every time you sit down to eat, you’ll be greeted with a variety of options for you to choose from, including all the essential food groups for a well-balanced meal every time.

If you have allergies or prefer not to eat certain foods, you should not worry. All you need to do is let us know before the trek and we will make sure you eat as well as everyone else in your group and enjoy as much fresh and local ingredients as possible.

It gets even better: we’ll also give you a cloth bag for which we provide snacks every morning to keep you going. We also set up a special ‘tea time’ at each camp with tasty light bites and hot drinks to keep you going until dinner.

You can see that you certainly won’t go hungry on the salkantay trekking and you will be able to try many of our traditional Peruvian dishes.

13What Will the Weather Be Like on the Salkantay Trek?

The weather in Cusco and its surroundings is very unpredictable. This makes it impossible to tell you exactly what kind of weather to expect on the hike. However, we can say for sure that the first night will be very cold and sometimes it can drop down to 0°C.

Thereafter, each night will get warmer as you descend to a lower elevation and deeper into the edge of the Peruvian jungle.
The rainy season in Peru is usually from the end of October to April, but there is always the possibility of rain. For this reason, we always recommend wearing a raincoat or poncho for protection.
