The Classic Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is an unforgettable four-day adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. This off-the-beaten-path trek offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains, beautiful lakes, rivers, and waterfalls while allowing you to experience the authentic beauty and tranquility of the Lares Valley.
During the Classic Lares Trek, you will connect with local Andean communities, discover their traditional lifestyle, and see families raising llamas, alpacas, and sheep. It is the perfect journey for travelers looking for a unique combination of nature, culture, and adventure before reaching the incredible Machu Picchu.
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco at 5:00 am. We will travel to Huaran, where you will enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared by our private chef before starting the trek. From here, we begin our hike through beautiful Andean landscapes towards the community of Canchacancha, taking in the peaceful surroundings and breathtaking mountain views along the way.
After approximately 2 hours of hiking, we will stop for a freshly prepared lunch by our cooks. Then, we continue for another hour until reaching Canchacancha, where you can meet local families, learn about their traditions, and experience their unique way of life. In the afternoon, our support team will prepare the campsite while you relax with a warm tea or “happy hour” before enjoying dinner. Spend the night surrounded by nature, under a spectacular sky full of stars, and if you wish, learn a few words in Quechua, the ancient language of the Andes.
The second day of the trek is the most challenging but also one of the most rewarding, as we ascend from 3,950 m (12,959 ft) to the highest point of the route, the Pachacutec Pass at 4,700 m (15,419 ft). Early in the morning, our support team will wake you up with a warm coca tea or coffee, followed by a delicious breakfast prepared by our expert chefs before starting the hike. The climb takes around 3 hours, offering incredible views of turquoise lagoons, rocky mountains, snow-capped peaks, and herds of llamas and alpacas guided by local Andean shepherds.
Once we reach Pachacutec Pass, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and a special connection with the mountains through a traditional Andean offering ceremony. After this experience, we continue downhill towards Coyalago, where we will have lunch beside a beautiful lagoon. The hike continues through scenic landscapes with waterfalls and local communities until we arrive at the campsite in Quiswarani (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), where you can relax with a warm tea, enjoy dinner, and spend a peaceful night surrounded by the Andes.
On the third day of the Classic Lares Trek, we continue our journey towards Aguas Calientes, enjoying a day full of adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments in the heart of the Andes. We wake up at 5:00 am with a warm cup of coca tea, followed by breakfast before starting the final hiking section of the trek.
The morning begins with a 2-hour uphill hike to Willkikasa Pass (4,400 m / 14,435 ft), where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Cuncani Valley, colorful lagoons, and impressive mountain scenery. Along the way, you may spot Andean wildlife such as chinchillas, Andean foxes, llamas, and alpacas, offering great opportunities for memorable photos.
After reaching the pass, we descend for approximately 2 hours to the community of Cuncani, where we enjoy a delicious lunch. Later, we travel by private transport to the famous Lares hot springs, where you can relax and enjoy the natural medicinal waters. Finally, we continue to Ollantaytambo, have dinner, and board the train to Aguas Calientes, where we spend the night in a comfortable hotel before visiting the amazing Machu Picchu the following day.
After completing the Classic Lares Trek, your experience at Machu Picchu will be much more than just a visit to an ancient wonder. While many travelers arrive by train only to see the famous Inca citadel, you will arrive with a deeper connection, having walked through the Andes, experienced local traditions, and discovered the culture that shaped this incredible civilization.
After an early breakfast, we take the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, a journey of around 25 minutes. We aim to arrive at approximately 6:00 am, allowing you to enjoy the magical atmosphere of the site with fewer visitors and admire the beautiful morning light over the ancient city.
After entering Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour of approximately 2.5 hours, learning about the history, mysteries, and importance of this incredible Inca masterpiece. Afterwards, you will have free time to explore on your own, visit places such as the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge, or hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if you have reserved tickets in advance.
At the end of your visit, we return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch. In the afternoon, you will take the train back to Cusco, where our transportation will be waiting to take you safely back to your hotel, completing an unforgettable journey through the Andes and the legacy of the Incas.

Cusco is a very old city, therefore it has many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnb may be located on streets with no car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to carry luggage. We strongly recommend that you book an accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also agree that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, everyone can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wants to modify the route; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications can be made.
It is very important to be well acclimatized to the altitude before exerting yourself on a hike. We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before the trek begins to help you acclimatize and avoid possible problems with altitude sickness during the trek.
Suppose you have already been to another area of Peru at a high altitude before arriving in Cusco. In that case, we still recommend that you have a full day in Cusco to rest, recover from your trip and fully enjoy your trek and have a unique experience.
Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored in our office (you can coordinate during the day of the briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both for free.
Any equipment you don’t need on the trek can be safely stored at your hotel. Almost all hotels will offer this service. Do not leave valuables with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and get an itemized receipt (in the unlikely event of theft, many insurance companies require you to have a copy of the receipt with all items). It’s best to put items like credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope for added peace of mind.
Strikes and demonstrations are often frequent in Peru, and this can interrupt some of our planned tours. They can block the roads and take control of the railroad tracks. However, we will try to keep your tour as planned, even if it means leaving the night before your scheduled date. In these circumstances, tours can also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our top priority and decisions will be made appropriately.
You are responsible for your personal belongings during the Classic Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days. Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to take everything once you leave your bus, tents, and restaurants.
