Feel the spirituality high in the mountains
Ausangate, sometimes spelled Auzangate, is one of the highest mountains in Peru and the most important apu (mountain spirit) in Andean mythology. Located in the Ocongate area of Cusco, the majestic Ausangate Mountain rises to an impressive 6,384 m (20,945 ft).
Ocongate is a rural area where time has stood still for centuries. Life here has changed little since the Inca era and you will discover some of the few remaining agricultural communities of this type in the world. As well as being famous for the epic Ausangate trek (5 days is the most popular adventure), this region is also a paradise for wildlife lovers.
The Ocongate hills are dotted with herds of llamas and alpacas, carefully tended by women dressed in traditional Andean costumes. They are also home to many wild animals, such as vicuñas, vizcachas, and Andean geese, to name a few.
One of the reasons why the hike to Ausangate is considered difficult is precisely the route at high altitudes. It is probably not suitable for hikers who recently decided to opt for this activity. Therefore, it is recommended that moderate walks have been previously carried out.
You can choose between two categories to carry out the extraordinary Ausangate Peru trek that they are; short (2-4 days) and long (5-7 days). If you have time, we suggest you opt for the route that lasts 5 to 7 days since the itinerary offers views and landscapes that will leave you speechless.
Complete Ausangate Peru Trek (5-7 days)
The charm of long hikes, which cover the entire circuit, is that you can appreciate the variety of high peaks from multiple angles, as well as traversing mountain passes, at least one and even up to two per day, at altitudes from 4,000 m (13,000 feet) up to 5,200 m (17,600 feet).
Short Ausangate Peru Trek (2-4 days)
These shorter routes, also known as Mini Ausangate Treks, are intended to provide trekkers with a “better” taste of the Ausangate region in a short, intense period of time. The trend of this route focuses on circulating around Lake Puka Qocha, the Ausangate glacier and the 7-color mountain.
