The Rainbow Mountains in Peru, Hikes in Cusco

All About The Rainbow Mountains in Peru

Which of the three hikes would you choose?

How many Rainbow Mountains are there in Peru?

If you are one of the many visitors who come to Cusco, you have probably wondered how many Rainbow Mountains there are in this dream region. When exploring the tour options offered by various tour agencies in Cusco, you may come across different mountain names, which can be confusing. So, how many Rainbow Mountains does Cusco have?

The answer is that Cusco is home to several Rainbow Mountains, but currently, three of them are part of the most prominent tourist circuits and will captivate you with their beautiful hues:

Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca: This is the most famous and known as the “Rainbow Mountain”. Its vibrant layers of colors, ranging from red to green, will leave you amazed. It is a must-see destination for nature and adventure lovers.

Palccoyo: Another jewel of the Cusco region is the Palccoyo mountain. Its unique color formations and relatively easy access make it a perfect choice for an exceptional experience during your trip.

Pallay Punchu: If you want to explore a lesser-known but equally impressive Rainbow Mountain, Pallay Punchu is a great option. Its natural beauty and the absence of large crowds allow you to enjoy a calm and serene environment.

Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca

This tour is designed for travelers who are short on time or to acclimatize to upcoming longer trips.

Throughout the rainbow mountain hike, the difficulty varies from moderate to challenging, which is mainly due to the high altitude exceeding 5,000 meters.
Although the Rainbow Mountain hike is usually packed with tourists, we started our adventure very early to be the first to arrive. This way you can enjoy the tranquility and beauty without many interruptions. We took our time and enjoyed the walk without pressure.

On this hike you will also be able to visit the red valley, expect to immerse yourself in the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the small communities that still maintain, that living culture of the Inca ancestors, observe numerous herds of llamas and alpacas grazing in the mountains and witness firsthand from millions of years of geological history. The imposing mountain landscape will surely be the protagonist of your photographs.

Rainbow Mountain Palcoyo

The Palccoyo rainbow mountain (4900 m – 16,070 feet), is located in the town of the same name Palccoyo in the department of Cusco-Peru.

It is a truly magical landscape where we can see three rainbow mountains, wide red valleys and also on this trip there is a geological beauty, Stone Forest where the rocks that stand out seem to have come from another planet which gives it an atmosphere of joy and at the same time a mystical place, perfect for lovers of nature and trekking in the Peruvian Andes.

This is the destination where we will discover and enjoy unique views such as the snow-capped Apu Ausangate (the highest and most sacred mountain in Cusco), beyond the splendid panorama that this route offers. Throughout the trip you will be able to see several places such as the old Inca, colonial and republican bridges, small towns in the Vilcanota Valley, Andean towns herding their llamas and alpacas, we will also observe wild animals.

Rainbow Mountain Palccoyo sees far fewer visitors and requires far less uphill hiking, making it a great way to admire Peru’s natural wonders without having to fight for the best vantage point. If you are looking for a destination like this, this is the right alternative.

Pallay Punchu Rainbow Mountain

Pallay Punchu, the recently discovered tourist destination in Cusco, has captured the hearts of adventurous travelers in search of unique experiences. This mountain, believed to be the third rainbow mountain in Peru, offers impressive colors that dazzle those who visit it. Locals believe that Pallay Punchu is protected by the Apu Tacllo, a geological formation that gives a touch of mysticism to this new treasure.

The mountain gets its name from its resemblance to a person dressed in the traditional Andean poncho, giving it a unique charm. This day trip is ideal for those looking for a challenge, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in nature.
