The Artisan Neighborhood

During Inca times, it was recognized as T’oqokachi, an important part of the ancient city of Cusco, where many architects and artisans lived. Due to the high location of this neighborhood, in the past it was considered one of the most visually striking places in the city since from this place you could have outstanding views of the Cusco valley, something that has been maintained to this day. . . .

It is believed that this place was of great importance to the Inca elite, since it was here that they found the remains of Pachacutec, an important Inca figure who ordered the construction of Machu Picchu. After the arrival of the Spanish, the name was changed to San Blas in honor of a renowned bishop from the 3rd century, who dedicated his life to the healing of people and animals.

Currently, San Blas has remained one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Imperial City of Cusco. Apart from history, the San Blas neighborhood is recognized for its cultural expression, since it is home to the most important local artisans.

What to see in San Blas?

  1. San Blas Square. It is located at the end of the Cuesta de San Blas, making it the perfect resting point after walking up this steep street. In the beautiful Plaza de San Blas you will find the Coca Museum, the Hilario Mendivil Workshop Museum, shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the main tourist attraction of this neighborhood, the Temple of San Blas.
  2. The Temple of San Blas. This church is the main colonial structure found in this neighborhood, it was built in 1563 on top of an Inca huaca dedicated to the Lightning God, Illapa. The temple was rebuilt in 1650 after it suffered extensive damage from an earthquake.
  3. Restaurants, Bars and Cafes. San Blas comprises a large part of the gastronomic culture of Cusco. Here you will find cevicherías, bars and famous restaurants that you cannot miss during your visit.

How to get to San Blas?
